Humanitarian Services

Fundraisers are held throughout the year to generate funds and donations. We also rent our spacious hall for weddings and other events. This allows our organization to provide school supplies, funds, and scholarships to area schools and children. Each year we host an Easter Egg Hunt and free lunch for any and all children who attend. Throughout the year we sponsor children in Little League, Pop Warner football/cheer leading and other sporting events they may otherwise never experience. Our single most important event of the year is our Christmas offering. We provide between 100-150 local families with groceries, a family sized turkey with trimmings, and gifts for all the children. Our Senior Citizens receive a generous gift card to use at a local grocery store. A few weeks before Christmas we host "Lunch or Dinner with Santa".Children eat for free and get to visit with Santa Clause and sometimes Mrs. Clause. You can help us achieve our goals through volunteering, donations and food drives. If you know a family in Orange City who needs our assistance please have them give us a call. We can help.

Our annual Sorosis Club Banquet was held at The Olive Garden in Orange City. The 2009-2010 Officers are as follows: Michelle Fowler, President; Sheila Seymour, 2nd Vice President; Gina Pronovost, 2nd Vice President; Mary Soyak, Correspondence Secretary; Julie Bertrand, Recording Secretary; and Ellee Massey, Treasurer. New members were initiated into the club and we welcome, Amy Briggs, Susan DeRuggiero, Andrea Henkle, Lorraine Myers, Crystal Murphy, Michelle Palmer, and Lorraine Paxton. 2009-2010 Woman of the Year is Beth Riley.

The Sorosis Club of Orange City is a women's civic organization which was formed in 1958. A group of local women banded together to build a youth hall for the children of Orange City after the original hall was destroyed in a fire. The idea was to raise funds to have the hall rebuilt, and upon its completion, to continue care and maintain the hall for future generations. Through the hard-working efforts of the Sorosis Women and generous donations from local residents and Merchants, the hall was completed in the early 1960's and continues to operate today.

Sorosis: Meaning of the Word:
A term related to "sorority," which is derived from the Latin word soror or sister. The term "sororize" has sometimes been used as a parallel to "fraternize."

A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR EXPO VENDORS

Our women's business expo is designed to assist area business women in networking with other women. We hoped to also draw in members of our community by offering door prizes and health screening. The networking portion was quite successful with vendors introducing themselves and their products to each other. Common interests and ideas were shared and some found ways to combine their businesses to help each other in future sales events. This is the most important part of a business expo, however, we will continue to work towards finding ways to bring the public in and increase potential.

A special thank you goes out to all of the vendors who participated in this years events. Your exhibits were professional and informative. Our members enjoyed meeting with you and appreciate your continued support to our club. We hope to have a few applications for membership come back as we are in need of new members. Your feedback on this event is vital and we would appreciate your opinions, ideas and suggestions in helping to make 2009 an even greater success.

2007 LUNCH WITH SANTA WAS A BLAST!!

After the Orange City Christmas parade hundreds of people joined Santa and Mrs. Clause for lunch. Each child received a stuffed animal & hard-cover book which was donated from KOHL'S DEPARTMENT STORE (on Harvey Strickland Blvd) to Orange City Elementary School for our benefit. They also received a balloon, coloring book & crayons. They left with bellies full, wishes to Santa made, and arms loaded. Lauren Briggs, one of our Elves, is busy untangling balloons and handing out gifts. A special Thank You from all of us to Kohl's for making such a generous donation.

The MULTIPLEX OF TERROR was a great success thanks to all of the hard work of so many volunteers. Volunteer "Elves" from Deland High School amused the children and assisted in keeping the line in order. When it was all over they got a chance to speak with Santa and Mrs. Clause.
